Understanding the Life Cycle of Head Lice
Understanding the life cycle of head lice can help families recognize an infestation early and take action before it spreads. Head lice develop through several stages, beginning as tiny eggs called nits and eventually becoming adult lice capable of laying more eggs.
1. Egg (Nit)
The life cycle begins when a female louse lays eggs, commonly known as nits. These tiny eggs are attached firmly to the hair shaft, usually close to the scalp where the temperature is ideal for development.
2. The Nit Hatches
Nits typically hatch in approximately 5–7 days. Once the egg hatches, a young louse called a nymph emerges.
3. Nymph Stage
The nymph feeds on blood from the scalp and continues growing. It passes through approximately three stages of development over the next 7–10 days before becoming an adult louse.
4. Adult Louse
Once mature, an adult head louse can live for approximately 30 days on the human scalp. During this time, lice feed on blood several times a day and can move from person to person through close contact.
5. The Female Begins Laying Eggs
After fertilization, a female louse can begin laying eggs within approximately 24 hours. This allows the infestation to continue and grow if the lice and nits are not detected and properly removed.
Common Signs of Head Lice
Head lice can sometimes be difficult to notice, especially during the early stages of an infestation. Common signs may include an itchy scalp, redness or sores caused by scratching, nits attached to hair close to the scalp, live lice in the hair, irritability, and difficulty sleeping.
How Can You Help Prevent Head Lice?
- Avoid direct head-to-head contact whenever possible.
- Do not share hats, brushes, combs, or hair accessories.
- Check your child's hair regularly, especially after possible exposure.
- Take action quickly if lice or nits are discovered.
